A TMJ disorder happens when your temporomandibular joints (the hinge-like joints that connect your jaw to your skull) become irritated, misaligned, or strained. Common causes include teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw clenching, arthritis, injury, bite misalignment, or stress-related habits. The exact cause isn’t always clear, but symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, popping sounds, or difficulty chewing, are very real.
You may have TMJ disorder if you have pain or discomfort in your jaw, especially when chewing, yawning, or speaking. Other common signs include clicking or popping sounds when you open your mouth or chew, headaches (especially near the temples), jaw stiffness, or difficulty opening your mouth fully. You may also notice that your teeth are becoming worn or sensitive from grinding.
Mild TMJ symptoms may improve temporarily with rest or lifestyle changes. However, ongoing or worsening discomfort usually requires professional care. Symptoms often return or get worse over time if the underlying cause, such as grinding, inflammation, or joint misalignment, isn’t addressed. Seeking care early allows us to manage your condition before it becomes more complex.
